Vastu for Kitchen in a Flat: Remedies Without Demolition
In Vastu, the kitchen is the fire zone of the home. The south-east is preferred and the north-west is widely accepted. A kitchen in the north-east, south-west or centre is considered a defect. In a society flat you can’t move the kitchen, but you can place the hob in the best part of the platform, cook facing east where possible, keep fire and water apart, and use colours that support the zone the kitchen actually falls in.
How Vastu reads kitchen directions
| Kitchen zone | Common Vastu view | Flat-friendly approach |
|---|---|---|
| South-East | Preferred (zone of fire) | Keep it; fine-tune hob position and colours |
| North-West | Widely accepted alternative | Keep it; hob towards the south-east part of the kitchen if possible |
| South | Often acceptable | Check the exact zone on the map |
| North-East | Strongly avoided (fire in the water zone) | Lighten the zone, keep it very clean, use zone remedies |
| South-West | Avoided (fire in the stability zone) | Strengthen balance; avoid heavy fire use in the corner |
| Centre (Brahmasthan) | Avoided | Keep the area open; minimise clutter and heat |
| North | Generally avoided | Remedy depends on the exact zone |
These are commonly taught positions. The exact reading depends on where your kitchen falls on a 16-zone map of the whole flat, not on the direction a single wall faces.
Step 1: Map the kitchen correctly
Many flat owners call their kitchen “north-east” because the window faces that way. In Vastu, what counts is where the kitchen sits relative to the centre of the whole flat. Map the flat with true north, mark the centre, and divide it into 16 zones. At Numeroworldf we also overlay the 32-devta Vastu Chakra, which shows which part of the platform falls in which zone, so the hob can be placed in the best part.
Step 2: Remedies inside the kitchen, no demolition
Hob (gas stove) position
Within the platform, place the hob in the part that falls closest to the south-east of the kitchen, if your gas connection allows it. In many Mumbai buildings the piped gas point decides where the hob goes, so check with your gas provider and society before shifting it.
Cooking direction
Facing east while cooking is the most commonly recommended direction. If the platform makes that impossible, facing north is often suggested as the next choice. Facing south while cooking is generally avoided.
Keep fire and water apart
Avoid placing the hob directly next to the sink, or the fridge right beside the stove with no gap. Even a small gap or a non-metal divider helps keep the fire and water elements separate.
Colours
For kitchens in the south-east or north-west, warm tones (orange, light red, peach, cream) are commonly used. For a north-east kitchen, light and soft colours keep the zone calm. Avoid heavy dark shades. You can apply colours through paint, a backsplash, tiles or accessories.
Light, ventilation and cleanliness
A chimney or exhaust, clean surfaces, no stale food, and no broken utensils kept in storage. In Mumbai’s humidity, a damp, dark kitchen weakens any remedy.
Specific notes by defect
Kitchen in the north-east
This is the most serious kitchen placement. Keep the kitchen as light, dry and clean as possible. Avoid storing heavy items on the north-east wall, keep the hob away from the north-east corner of the kitchen, and apply a zone remedy chosen after mapping.
Kitchen in the south-west
Avoid placing the hob in the south-west corner itself. Keep that corner for heavy storage instead, which suits the earth element of the zone.
Kitchen near the centre
Open-kitchen layouts in newer Mumbai projects sometimes place cooking near the Brahmasthan. Keep the centre clear of clutter and appliances, and take cooking heat and smoke out efficiently.
What not to do
- Don’t break the kitchen platform or relocate the kitchen without checking gas lines, plumbing and society rules.
- Don’t put a mandir inside the kitchen above the hob.
- Don’t keep the dustbin, broom or medicines in the fire area of the platform.
When to consult
If your kitchen is in the north-east or south-west and the rest of the flat also has defects, a proper survey helps you decide what to fix first. FAQs
Which direction should I face while cooking?
East is the most commonly recommended. North is a common second choice. Facing south while cooking is generally avoided.
Is a north-west kitchen bad?
No. North-west is widely accepted as an alternative to the south-east. Fine-tune the hob position and colours.
Can I keep the fridge in the kitchen?
Yes. A common suggestion is the south-west or west part of the kitchen, away from the hob.
Does the kitchen door direction matter?
It matters less than where the kitchen and the hob fall on the map. Keep the doorway clear and well lit.
